Job Description

New Covenant Legal Services (NCLS) was founded in 2013 and is a faith-based legal services organization serving individuals who are on low or fixed incomes in the St. Louis metropolitan area. NCLS accepts no public money and provides spiritual counseling and prayer as well as legal counseling to individuals.

NCLS is part of the legal network of Christian Legal Society, although we have our own board of directors and operate as an independent religious 501(c)(3). We are somewhat unique in that our organization provides full litigation services as well as pro se coaching and counsel. Executive Director Al W. Johnson is a retired trial attorney and NCLS has 10-12 volunteer attorneys who represent clients in court on various consumer law issues such as landlord/tenant, bad debts, and the like. NCLS is looking for an associate attorney to work under the supervision of the Executive Director to provide legal services to individuals.

NCLS is prepared to offer a competitive compensation benefits package, commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities Include

• Counseling individuals who have legal problems;
• Preparing petitions, motions, and other legal pleadings in connection with representation of clients;
• Appearing in court for motions and pre-trial matters;
• Conducting bench trials and potentially jury trials in cases that cannot be settled.
  
  

The Ideal Candidate Will Have At a Minimum

• A law degree from an accredited law school;
• Licensure in the state of Missouri and/or ability to obtain a Missouri law license via reciprocity from another state;
• 1-3 years of experience as a litigator;
• Strong spiritual values and the ability to adhere to the NCLS statement of faith.
