Job Summary (Primary function)
This position is responsible for providing support in Histology, Clinical Pathology and Necropsy to Toxicology, Translational Medicine, IAI, Biotherapeutics and Preclinical Pharmacology.

Essential Functions of the Job (Key responsibilities)

  • Perform necropsy of mice and rats, oversee necropsy setup, cutting, and trimming. Utilize knowledge of Pathology Data Systems (PDS) to enter macroscopic findings and organ weights.
  • Clinical Pathology setup and instrument maintenance per study. Collection and running of Hematology and Clinical Chemistry samples using the current in-house equipment. Working knowledge of analyte ranges, interpretation of data, control data and calibration data. Use of PDS to transfer Clinical Pathology data and QC of said data.
  • Preparation of Histology slides from various animal models in collaboration with CRO's and in-house study tissues, including trimming, processing, embedding, sectioning, and H&E staining. Assist with quality assessment of the Pathology slides. Working knowledge of maintenance of the instrumentation to perform these functions.
  • Preparation of immunohistochemically stained tissues sections and organic stained tissue sections on a per study basis.
  • Archive gross tissues, tissue blocks, and slides generated by the Histology group. This includes maintaining current inventory and records of all archival material. This will also include coordinating the movement of blocks to EPL (as deemed necessary by Archivist) and managing the disposal of formalin-fixed tissue within timelines as determined by our pathologist.
  • Receipt, inventory, and return of GLP and non-GLP peer review studies from CROs as outlined by our Peer Review SOP. Coordinate with Quality Assurance regarding our Biennial Review.
  • Collaborate and support other groups in the method development of animal models, ensuring inclusive practices and diverse perspectives are considered. Working knowledge of cell culture preparation, alternative media preparation, and whole blood assays, with an openness to diverse methodologies and inclusive scientific approaches.
  • Provide training and support to team members, as needed.

Qualifications (Minimal acceptable level of education, work experience, and competency)

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Medical Technology, or a related field; or equivalent education and experience.
  • ASCP HT Certification is preferred but not required, and equivalent experience or certifications will be considered.
  • Relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry is preferred, but not required, to encourage candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply.
