This position is based on Stanford's main campus with consideration given to the option for a hybrid work schedule (partially onsite and offsite), subject to operational need. Interested candidates must include a resume and cover letter to be considered for this position.
This is a one-year fixed term full time position with the possibility of renewal, dependent on funding availability and programmatic need.

Environmental Social Sciences at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability is a new and rapidly growing department. The mission of the department is to shed light on the causes of humanity's sustainability challenges, to design and evaluate potential business strategies, public policies, and behavioral interventions to meet these challenges, and to educate future scholars and leaders who will further our vision of understanding and solving these challenges.
Solomon Hsiang, Professor in the Department of Environmental Social Sciences at Stanford University, directs the Global Policy Laboratory where his team is integrating econometrics, special data science, and machine learning to answer questions that are central to managing global resources.
The Global Policy Lab is seeking a full-time Social Science Researcher 1 (SSRP1) for a period of 12 months to start from summer 2025 at the earliest, with the possibility to extend for another year. The SSRP1 will support and collaborate on a series of new and ongoing projects related to development and the environment, with a particular focus on a unique dataset mapping human development and environmental change across the developing world since the 1940s, derived from recently-digitized historical aerial photographs. The SSRP1 will work closely with an international team of researchers.
**Your Responsibilities will include:**
+ Plan and perform research tasks requiring initiative and judgment by applying basic knowledge and understanding of scientific theory when precedents do not provide specific guidance. General instruction provided by the supervisor as needed. May interpret study results in collaboration with supervisor or PI.
+ Build and organize data as requested by principal investigator or supervisor; use common statistical programs requiring the application of job control language in generating and organizing data.
+ Design and manage outsourcing for image labeling and georeferencing.
+ Conduct statistical and econometric analysis, primarily using Stata, Python, ArcGIS, and Google Earth Engine.
+ Conduct literature searches, and write literature summaries and manuscripts, requiring preliminary judgments after the supervisor outlines conceptual approach.
+ Identify, select, extract and summarize data and structured information. Present summary of findings to supervisor.
+ Write project reports that summarize analysis and create data visualization through use of common graphics, such as charts, plots, infographics and animations.

**To be successful in this position, you will need:**
+ Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.
+ Extensive programming skills.
+ Strong interest in economics and public policy.
+ Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
+ Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
+ Effective oral and written communication skills.
**In addition, our preferred qualifications include:**
+ Prior experience as a research assistant.
+ Programming skills in Stata, Python, ArcGIS, and Google Earth Engine.
+ Knowledge of LaTeX.
+ Experience in working with big data and/or spatial data.

The expected pay range for this position is $34.00 to $40.41/hour.
