Network Engineer I - Network Engineering The Network Engineer I is a junior-level engineering (mid-level to advanced-level technician) position responsible for the operation and implementation of the Omni Fiber Network and its customer-facing, lab, and IT networks. It is typically filled by experienced Field, Technical Support, IT, Desktop, or NOC technicians seeking advancement into more engineering-focused roles. This is an "up or out" developmental position to higher-level roles in the Engineering and Operations organization. The Network Engineer I is expected to make career development progress and advance out of the role within 12-24 months.
This is a full-time, hybrid opportunity in Brownsville, TX. We cannot provide sponsorship for any candidates at this time.
Qualifications - 2+ years of experience in an IT or Internet service related technical field (Field/Installation Technician, Technical Support, IT Support, NOC, or similar role) or equivalent technical/university/vocational training programs
- Comfortable with working occasional maintenance window activities
- Provide occasional on-call support for escalations off-hours/weekends
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportations.
- Install and configure per MOPs or templates, operate, and provide basic troubleshooting for service provider and IT routing and switching equipment
- Physical ethernet/fiber/power/rack and cabling practices in a data center, professional office, or service provider environments
- Accurate execution of common technical support and incident management processes, including ticketing, method of procedure (MOP), customer support, documentation, and change management procedures
- Customer service, team, and speaking skills
- Fluency in English is required.
- Conflict resolution, empathy, and de-escalation during difficult customer interactions
- Ability and patience to explain and relate technical topics to non-technical people
- An always-helpful positive attitude
- Broadband customer troubleshooting and current or prior technical or field support skills
- Knowledge of TCP/IP and the common applications of the Internet (DNS, DHCP, etc.)
- Ability to navigate and guide others through Windows, Linux, and common Mobile platforms in GUI and CLI to perform network troubleshooting
- Knowledge of broadband home routers and the configuration/troubleshooting of both basic and advanced home broadband technologies (DHCP, NAT, Port Forwarding, UPnP, Firewall and Anti-Virus) and physical cabling
- Familiarity with WiFi technologies, including Mesh technologies and troubleshooting common WiFi connectivity and speed issues
- Familiarity with the concepts and implementation of subscriber provisioning for broadband services
- Self-motivated to learn and advance their skills in service provider network engineering, technologies, and practices.
Preferred Qualifications - Any of the following technical certifications:
- Cisco CCENT/CCNA
- Juniper JNCIA/JNCIS
- Nokia NRS-I
- Comptia A+/Network+/Linux+
- Equivalent certifications from any other vendor or networking related field
- Familiarity with internet caching technologies and CDNs
- Familiarity with common service provider level security threats and mitigation methods
- Knowledge of Windows / Linux system administration and common administration tasks
- A working knowledge of programming or scripting languages
- Broadband/Internet Service Provider experience strongly preferred
- Basic fiber optic technology and familiarity with fiber optic best practices
